Thumbtack Instant Responder: Replies That Go Out in Seconds

A Thumbtack instant responder is software connected to your Thumbtack account that sends your first reply to a new lead automatically, in seconds, while you are still up a ladder or under a sink. This page explains what these tools do, what they cannot do, and how to pick one.

What a Thumbtack instant responder actually does

Strip away the marketing and the job is narrow. A Thumbtack instant responder does four things, in order.

1
It stays connected to your Thumbtack account
Usually through Thumbtack's official sign-in, which you authorize yourself and can revoke. That is how the tool sees a new lead without you forwarding anything.
2
It notices the new lead within seconds
The moment a customer message lands, the clock starts and the tool is already moving.
3
It sends your first reply
With a fixed-message tool, that is one message you wrote in advance, often with the customer's first name filled in so it does not read like a form letter.
4
It gets out of the way
The thread is still yours. You reply when you are free, and the customer is already talking to you instead of waiting on silence.

Just as important is what an instant responder is not. A fixed-message responder is not a salesperson. It does not read the job details and invent a custom answer, it does not know your calendar, and it does not negotiate. What it buys you is a place in the conversation on a marketplace where customers message several pros at once.

Some tools go further: AI that writes a different reply for every lead, or follow-ups that chase for days. Those are different products at different prices. Know which one you are buying.

Why reply speed matters on Thumbtack

We are not going to quote you a statistic we cannot stand behind. Here is the part you can verify yourself today, by opening your own inbox and reading the timestamps.

A Thumbtack customer rarely contacts one pro. They describe a job once, reach out to several businesses in the same sitting, then compare whoever writes back. The first useful reply gets to frame the job: what it costs, what it includes, what happens next. Everyone after that is answering a conversation someone else started.

Silence reads as unavailable. A homeowner with a leak does not think "she must be on a job." They assume you are closed or not interested, and they move on to the pro who answered.

Leads do not arrive at convenient times. They arrive at 9pm on a Sunday, halfway through a gutter run, in a crawlspace with no signal. That is exactly when a first reply is hardest to send by hand.

You already paid for the lead. Your cost per lead is identical whether you answer in twenty seconds or twenty hours, so speed is the cheapest lever you have on money already spent. The arithmetic is in what Thumbtack leads cost and what slow replies cost you.

An honest exercise: pull your last twenty leads and write down the gap between the customer's first message and your reply. If your median is under two minutes around the clock, you do not need any of this. If it is forty minutes on weekdays and hours on weekends, you have found the gap.

Do you need a Thumbtack instant responder if Thumbtack has its own tools?

Fair question, and we would rather answer it straight than pretend the platform offers nothing.

Thumbtack does have reply features of its own. Quick Replies let you save messages you use often and drop one into a conversation instead of retyping it. That is a real time saver, and if your problem is typing the same paragraph forty times a week it may be all you need. Notice what it does not solve: you still have to see the lead and tap the button, so the clock keeps running until you pick up your phone.

Thumbtack also sells Front Desk, listed at $60/month with an enterprise tier at $500/month for multi-location businesses, as listed on their site, September 2026 (info.thumbtack.com/Front-Desk). Their page describes sending an initial message of your choosing to new customers around the clock. It comes from the platform itself, which is a genuine advantage. We have not audited how it works internally and we will not describe features we have not verified, so read Thumbtack's own page for current pricing and what is included.

The three differences we can put our name to:

  • Speed measured in seconds. Our first reply goes out the moment the lead lands.
  • Your own wording, editable in ten seconds. You write the message, you change it whenever you want, and you see exactly what went out.
  • $29 a month for the first-reply job. If a fast first response is all you need, you should not have to buy a whole front desk to get it.

The side-by-side version of that lives on our instant reply page.

Choosing a Thumbtack instant responder

Six questions worth asking any vendor, including us, before you hand over a card.

⏱️

How fast is "instant"?

Ask for a number. A tool that checks every fifteen minutes is not an instant responder, whatever the homepage says.

✍️

Whose words go out?

A fixed message you wrote, or AI text written per lead? Both are legitimate. Only one can say something you never approved.

🙋

Can you take over and pause?

You will need to step into a thread mid conversation, and some weeks you will want the automation off. Both should be one tap.

🔌

How does it connect?

Prefer an official sign-in you authorize and can revoke from your own account. Be wary of anything asking for your Thumbtack password.

📊

What are the caps?

Ask what happens at lead 26, or lead 300. A plan with monthly limits should say plainly what happens when you pass them.

💳

Price, trial, and lock-in?

Flat monthly, per lead, or annual contract? Is there a trial? Can you cancel yourself in the dashboard, or must you call someone?

The price question, with real numbers

Published prices range widely, and the pricing model matters as much as the number. Per-lead pricing looks cheap in a slow month and gets expensive in a busy one, so run it against your own lead volume.

Thumbtack Front Desk
$60/month, and $500/month enterprise for 9+ locations
LeadWinner
$2.99 per lead, or $49/week
Auto-Respond
$99/month
InstantResponse
$99/month, single location
LeadTruffle
$229/month and up
SwiftReplAI Instant Reply Starter
$29/month, 7-day free trial

Competitor pricing is as listed on their site, September 2026, and may change. These tools are not all doing the same job: the more expensive ones generally include AI replies, follow-up sequences, or multi-channel coverage. Compare the feature you actually need, not just the number.

What to put in your first reply

Nobody sells you this part, and it decides whether speed turns into a conversation. A fast bad message is still a bad message.

  • Greet them by name. One word of personalization separates a message from a notification.
  • Confirm you do this work, in their area. Half of what a customer worries about is whether they picked the wrong kind of pro.
  • Give one concrete thing. A price range, a timeline, or a clear next step. Vague friendliness moves nobody.
  • Ask exactly one question. Two questions is a form. One question is a conversation, and it gets answered from a phone.
  • Say when a human follows up. "I'll call you within the hour" sets an expectation you can keep.
  • Keep it to about four lines. It is read on a phone, probably while standing up.

Do not write it to sound like you are typing live when you are not. "Thanks for reaching out" is honest and reads fine. The shape of a first reply that works:

Customer, 8:52pm
Need a 2-bedroom apartment move on the 14th, second floor, no elevator.
Your instant reply, 8:52pm
Hi Dana, thanks for reaching out. Yes, we do second-floor apartment moves and the 14th looks open. Two movers and a truck usually runs $420 to $560 for a 2-bedroom depending on stairs and load time. What time of day works best for you? I'll follow up personally within the hour.

Illustrative example. Write your own numbers and your own promises, and only promise what you can keep.

Where SwiftReplAI fits

We build one narrow thing well, and we would rather tell you exactly what it is than let you find out on day three.

Instant Reply Starter, $29/month. You write one first message. Every new Thumbtack lead gets it in seconds, day or night, and it can greet each lead by first name. Edit the message anytime, take over any conversation, pause automatic replies whenever you want. To be clear about the limits: this plan does not write AI replies, does not quote prices dynamically, and does not send follow-ups. It sends the one message you wrote, fast, every time. If you want replies written per lead, that is a different plan and we price it accordingly.

FAQ

What is a Thumbtack instant responder?
It is software connected to your Thumbtack account that sends your first reply to a new lead automatically, in seconds, without you opening the app. SwiftReplAI's Instant Reply Starter sends one message you wrote in advance and can greet each lead by first name. You take the conversation from there.
Does an instant responder write custom replies for each lead?
That depends on the tool, and it is the main thing to check before you buy. SwiftReplAI's $29 Instant Reply Starter sends one fixed message you wrote yourself. It does not write AI replies, does not quote prices dynamically, and does not send follow-ups. AI replies written from your business profile are the $97 AI Responder plan.
How is this different from Thumbtack Quick Replies or Front Desk?
Quick Replies are saved messages you still tap yourself, so the clock keeps running until you pick up your phone. Front Desk is Thumbtack's own paid service, listed at $60/month with a $500/month enterprise tier as listed on their site, September 2026, and it sends an initial message to new customers. SwiftReplAI is independent. We compete on price, on sending in seconds, and on the message being your own wording.
Can I take over a conversation or turn the automation off?
Yes. The automatic message is only the first response. You can reply yourself at any point, edit your message whenever you want, and pause automatic replies from your dashboard.
What does SwiftReplAI cost and when am I charged?
Instant Reply Starter is $29/month, AI Responder is $97/month with up to 25 AI leads per cycle, and Pro Unlimited is $197/month. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial. A card is required at signup but you are not charged during the trial, and the trial starts the day you connect Thumbtack. If you never connect, the signup cancels itself and you are never charged.
