Thumbtack Lead Refunds: What Qualifies and How to Get One (2026)

You paid for the lead. The job is 40 miles outside your travel area, the phone number is dead, or the customer never answered a single pro. Can you get the money back?

Sometimes — if you know the rules. Thumbtack's refund policy says plainly that "All refunds are made at our sole discretion" (refund policy), but as of September 2026 the policy lists specific qualifying situations, refunds that happen automatically, and a 45-day clock on everything else. Here's the full picture, sourced from Thumbtack's own help pages.

The short answer

Refunded automatically — no request needed (source, source):

Refundable if you request within 45 days of the charge (source): the seven situations in the checklist further down.

Not refundable (source): the customer hired a different pro ("we don't provide refunds in these situations"), and anything after account closure — "all sales and fees on Thumbtack are final and non-refundable" once you close. Leads that are flexible on dates don't qualify under the availability rule, though Thumbtack says if you tried rescheduling and couldn't reach a resolution, "request a refund and we'll look into it." Courtesy credits, prepaid packages, and promotional balances never go back to a card, and credit packages themselves are non-refundable.

The 72-hour unresponsive-customer refund (Thumbtack Numbers)

This is the newest and most useful automatic refund. Thumbtack Numbers — the dedicated per-lead phone numbers Thumbtack staff took questions on in a June 2026 community AMA — come with this rule: "we automatically refund you if a customer doesn't reply to any pro they contacted within 72 hours" (Thumbtack Numbers refund policy).

But you only stay eligible if, per the same article:

Two caveats, both from the same policy page. Some services "are excluded for legal or regulatory reasons, so these leads aren't assigned Thumbtack numbers" — no number, no 72-hour protection. And the protection depends on keeping the whole conversation on Thumbtack: "To be eligible for a refund, keep your conversation on Thumbtack."

Worth knowing: in community threads from the June 2026 rollout, one pro objected to "the recent 10 percent increase in lead pricing," and a Thumbtack community admin replied that "the 10% increase was tied to the added value of Thumbtack Numbers" (thread). Other pros object that dropping their real business number into the chat strips refund eligibility (thread). That's reported experience from Thumbtack's forum, not official pricing — Thumbtack doesn't publish per-lead prices.

Notice the four-business-hour requirement? Refund eligibility now literally depends on how fast you reply. SwiftReplAI connects through Thumbtack's official OAuth and sends your first reply in seconds — on-platform, where Thumbtack can see it. The 45-day checklist: seven situations that qualify

All seven come from Thumbtack's refund policy for pros, current as of September 15, 2026. You must request within 45 days of the charge.

#SituationThe fine print
1Job changed significantlyExample given: "the customer changes the job location, and it's now outside of the travel area you've set up in your job preferences." Keep the conversation in Thumbtack messenger or attach screenshots.
2Customer's first contact was "no thanks""This only applies to customers you meet through the Opportunities tab of your Jobs page."
3Lead violates the Terms of UseReport the customer to request the refund.
4Job date was outside your availabilityOnly for leads with "a specific date that isn't flexible, like planned celebrations such as a wedding or deadline-specific projects such as a move" — and only if you'd blocked that date in your calendar and business hours. "Leads that are flexible on dates or don't specify an exact date wouldn't qualify."
5Invalid phone number"If you get a disconnected or invalid phone number, request a refund and we'll look into it." No guarantee customers answer — that alone doesn't qualify.
6Duplicate leadSame customer, identical job, within 45 days. Two different jobs from the same customer in 45 days is explicitly not a duplicate.
7Leads paid with promotional creditsQualify if they fall under any situation above.

How to request a refund, step by step

Per Thumbtack's how-to article:

  1. In the Pro app: Profile → gear icon → Payments → View your balance and charges → select the lead → "Request a refund (at the bottom of the pop-up)" → follow the prompts.
  2. Or from Messages: tap the three-dot menu above your conversation with that customer and select Request a refund.
  3. Attach evidence: up to six screenshots, image files only (JPG, GIF, PNG) — no PDFs; screenshot the PDF instead.
  4. Wait for the email: "You'll usually get an answer within 24 – 48 hours. If the situation needs further review, it could take up to four days" (refund policy).
  5. Check status anytime: Profile → gear → Payments → View your balance and charges → tap the charge. Statuses are Pending, Refunded, Credited (courtesy), or Denied. On desktop, use the Payments page → Activity tab.

Where the money goes: approved refunds go to your Thumbtack balance by default, and they "temporarily increase your budget for the current week." To get money back on your original card instead, you must contact Thumbtack within 10 business days of the approval, your balance can't be zero or negative, it goes to the original card only, processing takes 5–7 business days — and if you buy a new lead while it's processing, that comes out of the refund (source).

Why requests get denied

Thumbtack's own list: you asked after 45 days, it was a free lead, "There wasn't enough evidence to support a refund," "your preferences and account settings weren't set up to get the jobs you want," or the situation falls outside policy.

From Thumbtack's own community forum, clearly labeled as pros' reported experiences:

The upside from staff posts in those same threads (late 2024–early 2025): "all requests are now manually reviewed by a person, no automated denials," attachments are supported, and disputed denials can be escalated to refunddisputes@thumbtack.com (source, source).

The leak refunds can't fix

Read the exclusions again. The single most common way to lose money on a lead — the customer hired a different pro — is explicitly non-refundable (refund policy). Refunds recover the broken leads: dead numbers, wrong locations, duplicates. They do nothing for the good leads that went cold because you were on a ladder, in a crawlspace, or driving a truck when the notification hit.

And the platform is now built around speed: the 72-hour automatic refund requires a response within four business hours, and Thumbtack's Quality Commitment says customers "can contact no more than five pros from search results per project within four hours of making their first contact" (Quality Commitment Terms) — meaning up to five pros can be racing you to the same customer. We broke down the full math on that in Slow Replies Are the Most Expensive Mistake on Thumbtack, and what those leads cost in the first place in How Much Does Thumbtack Charge Per Lead.

That's the case for answering in seconds instead of hours. SwiftReplAI replies to every new Thumbtack lead on-platform, automatically:

Every plan uses Thumbtack's official OAuth, has a 7-day trial (card charged on day 8), and carries a 60-second reply guarantee: if a reply doesn't go out within 60 seconds, you get one subscription credit per billing period under Terms 6b. Setup takes about 30 seconds, and it works whether you run a moving crew, a cleaning company, or a handyman business.

FAQ

How long do I have to request a Thumbtack refund?

45 days from the charge, for every case-by-case situation. Requests after that are a listed denial reason (refund policy).

Do refunds go back to my card?

By default, no — they go to your Thumbtack balance. You can request the original card within 10 business days of approval; processing takes 5–7 business days, and prepaid packages, courtesy credits, and promotional balances never go back to a card (source).

Does giving a customer my real phone number affect refunds?

Yes. On Thumbtack Numbers leads, sharing your personal phone number or email voids the 72-hour unresponsive-customer refund, because Thumbtack can't verify off-platform replies (source). Keep the conversation on Thumbtack.

What happens to my budget when a refund is approved?

Approved refunds "temporarily increase your budget for the current week," so you may receive extra leads up to the refunded amount (source).
