Thumbtack Front Desk Problems: Why You Were Charged, What "Not Working" Means, and How to Cancel

If a $60 charge from Thumbtack appeared and you are not sure what you bought, or Front Desk sat silent while a paid lead went cold, this page answers that. Everything below comes from Thumbtack's own pages and pro community, linked so you can check it.

SwiftReplAI also sells a competing product. That pitch is one short section at the bottom, and you can skip it.

Charged? It is a monthly subscription renewing on your signup date, not a per-lead fee, and pausing your leads does not stop it.

Not working? Four situations get called this, and only one is a malfunction.

Refund or cancel? Lead refunds have a published policy and a 45-day clock. The subscription fee does not, so that part is a support conversation.

Why you were charged

Front Desk is a subscription. Thumbtack's help center describes it as a monthly subscription of $60 to $500 depending on plan, renewing on the same day of the month you signed up, which is also your billing day (What is Front Desk?). Their product page lists $60 a month for Starter and $500 a month for Enterprise, for businesses with nine or more locations, as listed on their site, September 2026 (info.thumbtack.com/Front-Desk).

The fee does not depend on how many leads arrived or whether Front Desk sent anything. Three details make it a surprise:

  1. You enrolled on a call, not at a checkout page. Thumbtack's page walks you to "Schedule a call" and describes enrolling by chatting with a team member. No cart and no price confirmation screen means no receipt in your inbox to search for later.
  2. Renewal is your signup anniversary, not the 1st. Sign up on the 22nd and you are billed on the 22nd, which reads as random in a month where Front Desk was not on your mind.
  3. Pausing leads does not pause the subscription. Hiding your business, switching job preferences off, removing a service and lowering your weekly budget all cut lead spend (Thumbtack's guide). None of them cancels Front Desk. A pro who goes quiet through a slow month and still sees $60 has usually hit this.

Before you dispute anything, confirm which charge you are looking at. Lead charges appear attached to a customer and a project. A subscription fee is its own line item, tied to no lead. If the statement is ambiguous, ask support to itemize the month: arguing about a $60 lead charge when you meant the $60 subscription burns your one good conversation.

What "Front Desk not working" usually means

This phrase covers four situations, and three of them are not malfunctions.

1. It sends the first message, and only the first message

Thumbtack describes Front Desk as sending "the initial message of your choosing to new customers" around the clock (their page). It is a first reply, not a conversation. If the customer answered and nothing more went out, it did what it says.

2. "Under two minutes" is the published speed, not instant

Front Desk's page states that it "automatically sends messages in under two minutes". Thumbtack's Quality Commitment, meanwhile, describes customers contacting up to five pros within four hours of their first contact. A message sent inside two minutes, exactly as advertised, can still land after somebody else replied. If your real complaint is losing jobs you paid for, the problem may be speed even when nothing failed. We ran that arithmetic in what slow Thumbtack replies cost.

3. It is scoped to new customer contacts

If a thread that was not a fresh inbound contact never got a reply, ask support which of your services and lead types Front Desk actually answers, and keep that answer in writing, before calling it a bug.

4. Sometimes it genuinely does fail

This happens, and it is documented on Thumbtack's own community forum. In a June 2025 thread, one pro reported that Front Desk did not respond to a lead and that she answered manually 1 hour and 28 minutes later, which she said hurt her response time, on top of paying $60 a month. An administrator asked whether she had contacted Support; the thread then records that Thumbtack offered a partial refund and said the service had been fixed (community thread). One thread is not evidence that Front Desk is broken in general. It does show that misses happen, and that a documented escalation got a real response.

What to capture before you contact support. The customer and project. The timestamp the lead arrived and the timestamp of the first message in that thread, screenshotted together. What the lead cost. The Front Desk message you configured, so nobody can say it was never set. And if the miss pushed out your response time, say so.

How refunds actually work here

There are two separate money questions, and mixing them is the fastest route to a no.

The leads you paid for. Thumbtack publishes a refund policy for pros covering lead charges. It lists qualifying situations, sets a 45-day window from the charge, and states plainly that "All refunds are made at our sole discretion". A customer who simply never replied is not on that list for most lead types, although Thumbtack Numbers leads carry an automatic refund when no pro replies within 72 hours, which requires a response within four business hours. Full breakdown on our lead refunds page. The 45-day clock is running, so file these first.

The subscription month. That policy is about leads. The Front Desk fee is not a listed qualifying situation, and Thumbtack's Terms of Use state that fees paid to Thumbtack are final and non-refundable except where their refund policy allows otherwise. So a Front Desk refund is a discretionary support decision, not a form. Ask for something concrete: a refund or credit of the month the failure happened in, plus the individual leads you can show went unanswered.

Two things we will not tell you, because neither is true: that refunds are always refused, or that you are owed one. Public reports run both ways. What helps is being narrow and dated. "Your service is broken" is hard to action. "Lead arrived 3:42pm Tuesday, no automatic message sent, I replied at 5:10pm, $87 lead, screenshots attached" can be approved. For denied lead refunds, community threads point pros to refunddisputes@thumbtack.com.

How to cancel Front Desk

The honest caveat first: we have no privileged view into Thumbtack's account screens, and self-serve paths change, so we will not invent a click path for you. What we can say accurately:

  1. Ask the team that sold it to you. Enrollment runs through a Front Desk team member per Thumbtack's own page, not a checkout, so cancelling is a support conversation. Say it plainly.
  2. Get the effective date and final billing date in writing. Renewal falls on your signup date, so "cancel it" and "cancel it before the 22nd" are two different requests.
  3. Do not rely on pausing leads. Those controls stop lead charges, not the subscription.
  4. Check the next statement. A charge landing after your confirmed cancellation date is the cleanest refund request you can file: you have their own date to point at.
  5. Look it up at the source. help.thumbtack.com is the authority on the current path and contact options. Start there rather than any third-party "how to cancel" page, this one included.

If you still want automatic first replies afterwards

This is the sales part. Here is the honest scope.

SwiftReplAI's Instant Reply Starter is $29 a month and does one thing: it sends one first message you write yourself to every new Thumbtack lead, in seconds, and it can greet the customer by name. That is the whole feature. It does not write AI replies, quote prices dynamically, or send follow-ups. Those belong to our $97 AI Responder plan, which writes full replies from your business profile with up to 25 AI leads per cycle, and our $197 Pro Unlimited plan.

The trial mechanics, plainly: 7 days free, a card is required at signup, and the trial starts the day you connect Thumbtack. If you never connect, the signup cancels itself and you are never charged. Cancel anytime. Setup runs through Thumbtack's official sign-in and takes about 30 seconds rather than a scheduled call.

And if Front Desk is working for you, keep it. One vendor and one bill is a real advantage. If you are weighing options, we compare eight tools, ours included, in our guide to the best Thumbtack auto responders.

FAQ

Why was I charged $60 by Thumbtack for Front Desk?

It is a monthly subscription, not a per-lead fee, and it renews on the same day of the month you signed up.

Does pausing my leads or hiding my business cancel Front Desk?

No. Those controls cut lead charges only, which is why a pro who went quiet for a month still sees the monthly fee.

Can I get a refund if Front Desk did not reply to my leads?

Sometimes, but it is a support decision rather than a form. File the lead refunds inside Thumbtack's 45-day window, then raise the subscription month separately with timestamps.

How do I cancel Thumbtack Front Desk?

Contact Thumbtack support, ask explicitly to cancel the Front Desk subscription, and get the effective date in writing. Check help.thumbtack.com for the current path, since it can change.

Is Front Desk supposed to answer the whole conversation?

No. Thumbtack describes it as sending the initial message of your choosing to new customers. If the customer replied and nothing further went out, it behaved as described.

Thumbtack pricing and policy details above are quoted from the linked pages as of September 2026 and may change. Community posts are individual pros' reported experience, not verified outcomes.

Want the first reply handled for $29 a month?

One message you write, sent to every new Thumbtack lead in seconds. Not AI replies, not follow-ups.
