Your Thumbtack Response Rate, Explained Without the Guesswork
Search this topic and you get a dozen forum arguments and no straight answer. Here is what the metric is, how the clock is counted, and what you can actually do about it. Every number below is linked to a Thumbtack page.
Start My Free 7-Day Trial →Response rate is Thumbtack's metric. Thumbtack defines it, measures it, and has changed the rules before. The whole Top Pro program was folded into a tiered rewards program, and the qualifying windows changed with it.
That is why most of what you find online about this is wrong: somebody wrote down a threshold years ago and a hundred blogs copied it. We checked Thumbtack's own pages in September 2026 and we link every figure we repeat. Thumbtack's moderator posts do not always show a year on the page, so treat any figure here as a starting point and confirm the live number in your own pro account before you plan around it.
If a tool ever promises you a badge, a tier or a search position, that tool is promising something it does not control. Neither do we.
What Response Rate Actually Is
Two different numbers get called the same thing in forum threads. They are not the same, and only one of them can be ruined by a lead you never opened.
What share of leads you answered in time
A percentage. Of the leads you got, how many did you reply to inside Thumbtack's window. A lead you never answered at all counts against you here, no matter how fast you are the rest of the time.
How fast you typically answer
An average. Useful, and customers can get a sense of it, but it is a different figure. You can have a respectable average and still have a weak rate if a handful of leads slip through completely.
On Thumbtack's own community site, Thumbtack moderators describe response rate as the percentage of leads you respond to within 1 hour, counted between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. in your local time, and measured across a rolling three month qualifying period rather than over the life of your account (per Thumbtack, checked September 2026: Pro Rewards overview, moderator post on reply speed).
Three things follow from that definition, and they are the parts pros usually miss.
The window is not your business hours. The clock is not the whole day. The period rolls, so a bad week follows you for months.
How the Clock Is Counted
This is where the forum threads go sideways, because pros assume the clock follows the hours they set on their profile. It does not.
The window is fixed, not yours
Thumbtack counts response time inside a daytime window, described on Thumbtack's pages as 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time, regardless of the business hours you set on your profile. Setting your profile to close at 3 p.m. does not stop the clock at 3 p.m.
An overnight lead does not start burning your clock at midnight
A lead that lands late in the evening is not judged against a one hour window at that hour. The practical effect is not that overnight leads are free, though. It is that they are queued up waiting for you first thing, and they are competing against every pro who checks their phone before you do.
It rolls, which cuts both ways
Because the measurement covers a rolling stretch of months rather than this week, one brutal week during a heat wave or a family emergency keeps weighing on the number long after the week ended. The upside is the reverse: you do not have to be perfect starting today, you have to be consistent, and consistency compounds into the number on its own.
What counts as answering
A reply in the Thumbtack conversation is the thing Thumbtack can see. That sounds obvious, and it is the single most common way pros lose credit for work they actually did.
- A message you send in the Thumbtack thread is visible to Thumbtack.
- Reading the lead is not answering it. Opening the notification does nothing for you.
- Calling the customer on your own phone and never messaging in the thread leaves Thumbtack nothing to count. Thumbtack's published wording is about responding to the lead, and it does not say an off platform phone call counts. If you call, send a one line note in the thread too, so the record exists.
- Deciding a lead is junk and ignoring it still counts as a lead you did not answer. Declining it in your head is not a response.
The 1 hour figure, the 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. window and the rolling period are per Thumbtack's own community site and help center, checked September 2026. Full links at the bottom of this page. Thumbtack can change all of it.
Why Thumbtack Weights This So Heavily
It helps to stop thinking of it as a grade and start thinking about what Thumbtack is trying to solve.
A customer posts a project and messages a few pros. If none of them answer, that customer does not wait politely. They leave the platform and call somebody off a truck door or a neighbor's recommendation. Thumbtack loses the customer, and every pro who paid for that lead loses too.
So Thumbtack's incentive is to route customers toward pros who reliably answer. Thumbtack's help center says being responsive, communicating quickly and helpfully with customers, can help your rank in search results (per Thumbtack, checked September 2026). Responsiveness is also one of the qualifying conditions in the rewards tiers described below.
Your response rate is not a report card. It is Thumbtack's estimate of whether sending you the next customer is a good bet.
Which explains the part that feels unfair. The metric is not measuring how good a plumber or cleaner or mover you are. It is measuring something much narrower: when a stranger raises their hand, does a human answer quickly. That is a logistics problem, and logistics problems have practical fixes.
Pro Rewards, and Where the Top Pro Badge Went
The old Top Pro program was folded into a tiered rewards program. If you are searching for how to keep a Top Pro badge, this is the part you want, because the badge now rides on the top tier.

How the points work
Per Thumbtack's community site, you earn points for every lead you respond to at least once after the customer messages you, and completed bookings through Thumbtack are worth more. Read that sentence twice, because it means answering leads feeds two separate requirements at the same time: your response rate and your points total.
How the periods work, and what "keeping" the badge means
Per Thumbtack's community site, the year is split into qualifying periods that run in three month blocks, and status you earn holds for the rest of that period plus the entire next one. Thumbtack moderators have also said that pros at Platinum earn a Top Pro badge, and that the yearly badge appears on your profile only if you reach Platinum more than once in the year.
So there is no such thing as permanently keeping it. Every period is a fresh qualification, which is exactly why a habit beats a sprint. A pro who answers most leads within the hour, every week, without thinking about it, re-qualifies quietly. A pro who scrambles at the end of a period does not, because a rolling three month average cannot be fixed in a week.
These figures come from posts by Thumbtack moderators on Thumbtack's own community site, read in September 2026. Some of those posts are years old and were edited later, and the pages do not always display a year. Thumbtack has already restructured this program once.
Your own Pro Rewards status and your live response rate are shown in your Thumbtack pro account. That is the only number that is actually yours. Check it there, not here.
How Reply Speed Compounds Into More Leads
Not a growth hack. Just the mechanism, followed through to the end.
Answering fast does one obvious thing: you are in the conversation before your competitors, and the customer is forming an opinion while they still care. Everyone understands that part. The part that matters more is what happens over months.
- A reply protects the lead you already paid for. You spent money the moment that lead arrived. Silence is the only outcome where you get nothing at all for it.
- A reply earns points. Per Thumbtack's community site, responding to a lead after the customer messages you earns points toward a rewards tier. The same action that helps your rate helps your points.
- Conversations become bookings, and bookings become reviews. Reviews feed the star rating, which is its own tier requirement. You cannot get a review from a customer who never heard back from you.
- Standing affects visibility, and visibility affects how many leads you see next. Thumbtack's help center ties responsiveness to your rank in search results. More of the right leads in front of you is the actual compounding.
One reply touches your rate, your points, your review count and your rating. That is why speed is the highest leverage thing on this list, and why it is the one most pros lose by accident.
The reverse compounds too. Miss replies for a few weeks, and the rolling average sags, the points dry up, there are no new reviews, and you feel it as "Thumbtack stopped sending me good leads." Nothing was done to you. The metric simply did what it says it does.
What a Pro Can Actually Do About It
In order. The first five are free and most pros have never done all of them.
If You Want the First Reply Automated
Thumbtack sells this themselves, which tells you it is a normal thing to want. There are two straightforward ways to buy it.
- ONE fixed first message that you write
- Goes out in seconds when a lead lands
- Greets each lead by first name
- Edit the message anytime, pause anytime
- You take over the conversation whenever you want
- Thumbtack's own first reply product
- Built by the platform itself
- Broader front desk features you may or may not need
Be clear about what $29 does and does not do
The $29 Instant Reply Starter sends one fixed message that you wrote, in seconds, to every new Thumbtack lead, and it can greet the person by name. That is the whole product. It does not write AI replies, it does not run follow up sequences, and it does not calculate pricing. Full AI replies written from your business profile are our $97 AI Responder tier, and that is a different product on our pricing page.
We think that is the honest way to sell it, because a fixed first message is genuinely all that the speed problem needs. The thing that costs you the lead is the thirty minutes of silence at the start. Filling that gap does not require artificial intelligence. It requires something that is awake.
What we cannot tell you, and will not pretend to
Thumbtack does not publish a rule about how it treats a message sent through a connected tool versus one you typed by hand, so nobody outside Thumbtack can honestly promise you how any specific message is counted. What we can tell you is what happens mechanically: SwiftReplAI sends a real message from your account into the Thumbtack conversation, the text you wrote, connected through Thumbtack's official sign in, which you authorize and can revoke. Whether Thumbtack counts any given message toward any given metric is Thumbtack's decision.
We also cannot promise you a tier, a badge, a rank or a dollar figure. Those belong to Thumbtack, and Thumbtack can change the thresholds. Anyone selling you a guaranteed Top Pro badge is selling you something they do not own.
Thumbtack Front Desk is listed at $60/mo as listed on their site, September 2026, and may change. SwiftReplAI is an independent product, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Thumbtack. Thumbtack, Front Desk and Top Pro are trademarks of Thumbtack, Inc.
The Honest Caveat About This Whole Metric
Response rate is not a law of nature. It is a number one company chose to calculate a particular way, for its own reasons, and it can be redefined on any Tuesday. The old Top Pro program is proof: the criteria and the cadence changed, and a lot of pros learned about it from a forum thread rather than from a plan they had made.
That has two implications worth sitting with.
- Do not build your business on one metric on one platform. Answering fast is good practice everywhere. Optimizing your entire operation around a threshold a marketplace can move is a different and riskier thing.
- Verify anything dated, including this page. We linked our sources so you can check them yourself. If you are reading this long after September 2026, go read Thumbtack's own pages and your own dashboard, and trust those over us.
The part that stays true no matter what Thumbtack does with the formula: a customer who gets an answer in seconds feels attended to, and a customer who gets silence goes somewhere else. That was true before Pro Rewards existed and it will be true after whatever replaces it.

The Fix for a Slow First Reply Is Something That Never Sleeps
You already paid for the lead. If the only reason it goes unanswered is that you were under a sink, one fixed message you wrote once can go out in seconds instead.
